Still Analysis

For the performance still I think the original works better than the split screen. With the split screen image the audience has two stills to focus on whereas in the original there is only one to focus on. Claire’s face can be seen meaning her expression is visible in the original. We tried to show how dedicated she is to playing the piano by her serious expression as she is only focusing on what she is doing. Because of her position and the angle of the shot her face, costume, prop –which is the piano and location can be identified by the audience. This sets the scene and creates the atmosphere of which is musically based.

For narrative I think the desaturated still works better than the original still. The photo of Antonia is taken of the reflection in the mirror in which the audience sees her applying her makeup. The shot is a medium close up as her face and costume can be seen as well as the surroundings. The edited effect is black and white which creates the idea that the still is taken from an old film where the star is getting ready in her dressing room before a big show. The effect gives the impression that her face is flawless and because there is little colour in the image the audience’s attention is taken in too many directions so they can focus on the girl using a makeup brush.

For the image I think the edited still works better. The still shows myself at school, in a classroom studying. We took the image at an angle so more of the left side is shown of the student. The shot is a medium long shot as the costume, facial expression, props and location can be seen. Also because I am positioned more in the background than the foreground.  We then edited it so the still includes text which says ‘Starring Annie Sherwin’. This the creates a story and reveals a bit of  context. The audience can then receive more from the edited still making it more interesting and relevant.
